The History Of Marriott Hotels

Marriott International was established in 1993 when the Marriot Corporation split into dual companies, where the other company is named Host Marriott Corporation. Marriot International purchased 49 percent interest in the Ritz-Carlton corporation in 1995. Then in 1998 Marriot International purchased an additional 50 percent, which gave Marriot International 99 percent ownership.

In 2002 Marriott International started a huge reorganization by creating Senior Living Services Communities. It then began focusing more on hotel management and ownership as these changes were completed in 2003.

Marriott also owned Ramada International Hotels and Resorts for several years. This branch of Marriott was sold to Cendant on September 15, 2004. In 2006 Marriott announced that all their hotels in Canada and the United States were now non-smoking buildings scheduled to be enforced in September 2006. The hotel chain says that the new no smoking policy includes all rooms, lounges, restaurants, public spaces, meeting rooms as well as employee work areas.

The histories of the various branches of Marriott International is a varied and colorful past filled with mergers and acquisitions too many to detail here. For more comprehensive information, Wikipedia has an excellent page of resources on the various Marriot brands around the world.
